Dallas-Atlanta Weekend, Sept 18th

Standing proud after the tournament

On a glorious Spring morning that felt more like the middle of July the Tigers played host to the boys from Dallas and Atlanta. While still smarting from the Austin weekend (Rob’s nose certainly looked pretty ordinary) the BR-Houston team was looking for a little bit of redemption. While the challenge of Dallas loomed large, especially given their tremendous form all year (especially on the road which is a real credit to the Magpies), the BR boys highlighted the Atlanta game to lay it all on the line.

As game time rolled around the Baton Rouge lineup were severely depleted by all manner of forces. Peloton Peeps had crashed his bike out on the second to last corner, Mop was restricted to the role of field umpire, Fit Mick disappearing into the wild and Conan LaRose was crippled by his summer soccer exploits. All whining aside, we were still able to manage a solid side, especially given the contribution from the Houston boys.

Game one pitted the Tiger combo against the Kookas with the Atlanta squad immediately piled on the pressure. With their seasoned legs fresh, and a very impressive and experienced midfield led by the skillful Danny Searle the Kookas dominated the first half with 7 unanswered goals. It was certainly a disappointing start for the home side, but to the credit of the home team they played their guts out in the second half and co-ordinated to put together some really good footy and hold their own against the visitors. The game was played in the BR end of the field for much of the second half with Atlanta’s experience letting them get the ball out of the center easier and quicker. Our defense however managed to stand strong and stifle their advancing midfield. In the end the scores would show that the Tigers matched the Kookaburras in the second half, a fitting return for some great effort showing the potential of this team even when under manned. Credit to the Kookas though, who showed too much class in the first half for the Tigers and improved their BR record to 4 wins, 1 loss.

As for game 2 against Dallas, it was a struggle from the beginning as the rampant Magpies jumped to a fast start and never let the foot off the gas. Led by the stellar combo of Relf and Stores in the middle the ball endlessly seemed bottled in the Dallas half with BR’s efforts to score frequently stalling short of the goal posts. As the mercury continued to rise, and some tired legs on the BR side of the ball began to struggle, the constant pressure of Dallas was quickly reflected in the lopsided scoreboard. Importantly we did score against Dallas this time, and managed to hold them to 14 goals. A positive note with this being a huge improvement over the Austin weekend.. By my calculations that means we are moving in the right direction!

As always lessons were learnt for the younger players like Daniel and Jason, and Irish James showed why Irishmen will always have a place in Australian Football Teams across the world. A special mention also to Minnesota who I think played his best games for the club this past weekend, and Military Mike who punished people all day long!

Once the games were done the legendary Baton Rouge hospitality kicked into high gear. A good showing from all teams braved the heat and made it down to the LSU parade grounds at the ‘all you can eat and drink Jambalaya fiesta tailgate’ for the LSU Vs Mississippi State game.

Three tents, 2 kegs, 30 gallons of Jambalaya, beer pong, and some very strange looks from everyone around us as we kicked the footy on the Parade Grounds made for a great way to relax after the combat of the morning’s games. It was a great way to spend the arvo, tailgating for the first LSU game of the season and hanging with the visiting teams. As the day progressed visitors and locals drifted off to watch the game in Death Valley before stepping out into BR for the night.

Austin Roadtrip, August 28th

After a good bit of organizing and several last minute dropouts Baton Rouge headed for Austin to face off against the big boys of Texas, . . . the Dallas Magpies, and the Austin Crows. With last years trip such a great time both on and off the field there was an air of expectation about this trip. Unfortunately due to many factors, it was a modest Baton Rouge crew who were able to travel. Luckily they were well supported by a Houston team represented by solid numbers given the 12 months since their second coming.

As for the footy… it was two tough games against tough opponents and though we played hard and had impressive moments of play we were, simply put, out played by the older and stronger teams. We ultimately fielded a team of 20 that included as much inexperience as any in the Tigers 7 year existence. This would prove telling as we failed to trouble the scorer in both the Austin and Dallas encounters, and struggled to string together the 5-6 consecutive possessions required to move the ball end-to-end on the outrageously large Austin field.

That said, the effort from everyone was tremendous, particularly in the Austin game while our legs were fresh. Young Dan and Jason showed a great deal in their first serious matches, Dan impressing with his desire to contest and Jason learning some valuable lessons from defending more experienced opponents. As always Joe played with the fire and Neil did awesome, as he scratched and clawed in typical style in his admirable rucking role against younger, longer legs. For all the effort the day, the results were best summed up by the sickening head clash between Rob and Nate that resulted in both being carted from the field: a great endeavor, but a little off in the execution.

Once the work on the field was done, the recovery started, first at the field with the other teams, then off to the Annual Austin SEC Tailgate at Zilker Park. Literally hundreds of Expat Alumni from virtually all the SEC schools gathering to share stories of their schools glory days and brag on the season about to start. Good food, refreshments and good company flowed throughout the afternoon and set the mood for the night ahead. After a few hours of tailgating as only Baton Rougians truly know how to, it was back to the hotel to prepare for a night on 6th street. First stop was a short walk from the downtown hotel to The 4th St Lounge with both the other teams for more food and drinks and some off field banter on who took out who and what the umpire didn’t see. Once the 4th St. lounge slowed down, people spread out onto 6th street to meet and greet the natives and a night of losing and re-finding each other in various dives and establishments, some crashed early, some not till the wee hours. All in all a good night (really, when do we ever have a bad one?), with a few stories not to be repeated, as always.

Houston Scratch Match August 14th

After fairly short notice we were able to pull together a nice, cheap and easy Scratch Match (‘scrimmage’ for those not yet educated into Aussie folklore) against Houston, as a warm up for the upcoming Austin tournament. Several of the Houston guys showed up Friday night to grab a few beers and kip on the floor at Footy Central and a few more made their own arrangements.

By Saturday morning we all assembled for a good 9 on 9 match with a couple of subs on a regular sized American Football field. It worked out well with everyone getting a good run and Nick showing off his manliness by first breaking his nose on Chris’s head and then getting me to set it straight. As they say 3rd times a charm and by the 3rd attempt we had it straighter than before he’d broken it.

The teams were picked at random to mix up Houston and Baton Rouge players in an effort to get both teams to work together and highlight strengths and weaknesses. A lot of really good game experience came out of the 4x 15 min game with good numbers of friends and family on the sideline cheering us on, even if ½ of them still didn’t fully understand what was happening.

After the game, a few refreshments and a small photo shoot occured where the Hair Hat made its appearance. Some of the Houston Guys were then treated to a quick tour of Downtown BR and LSU (including Mike the Tiger), before heading back to Footy Central for a shower and some grub put on by the host. By early afternoon the Houston guys were clean and fed and on their way either down to New Orleans for the Red Dress Run or back to Houston.

All in all an easy, cheap and fun road trip for a good bit of Footy. Basically a blueprint for some future scratch matches with the Houston crowd.

AWESOME !!!!!

Tunica Hills Run July 31st

Clark Creek Nature Area

Saturday Morning July 31st @ 10 am, half a dozen guys and girls + dogs etc from the Tigers met at Footy Central for the 45 minute trek up to Tunica Hills national park to hike and run the trails and then on to an afternoon of BBQing by the pool. Our departure was delayed by calls from Joey and Big Dave saying that they were on their way and by 11 we were on the road with plans to meet the stragglers en route. Full marks to Big Dave for tracking us down on the drive up, but then we lost him at a pit stop and the game of hide and seek started that would last most of the rest of the day, first spotting his car at Tunica then him finally meeting us at Flea’s place 4 hours later. As anyone who’s ever been up to the hiking trails at “Clark Creek Nature area” knows, there is no cell coverage for miles, so once you’re lost, you’re on your own.

After a little difficulty actually finding the start of the hiking trail we were off for a run down into the shade but increasing heat of a very beautiful but different landscape for Louisiana.

What followed after the miraculous appearance of the Mighty Joey was a 90 minute run down trails, through 3 waterfalls, along creek beds and finally a run/walk back up to the top. All in all a good hard run with some great guys and girls through a really pretty, but challenging landscape not far from Baton Rouge.

Then it was off to try to find Flea’s country retreat and settle in for the arvo by the pool with the smells of BBQ in the background and cold beers in the cooler. More Tigers met us there including Flea and Aaron on crutches from his summer soccer escapades.

All in all a good run, pretty scenery and a nice way to spend a Saturday arvo, and a good change to the training schedule. Thanks to Flea for having us over, good on ya to all that showed, especially nice to see Dazza, Dara, Spider, Minnesota, ROTC Mike, Neil and Kyle and again good effort to Joey and Big Dave for tracking us down as well as all the others that showed.

Good times were had by all and definitely something to do again next year.

Think Melbourne Demons

The team we should model ourselves on this season is the Melbourne Demons. They feature a number of young, inexperienced players but they’re stringing together wins. The biggest was this past weekend against previously unbeaten Brisbane.

The Lions are bigger, more seasoned with a number of triple-premier players (+ Fevola), and arguably more skilled. But the Demons had two keys to their victory that we can copy: strong, aggressive, and constant tackling and using their young legs to stymie the big bad Lions.

Highlights below. Watch how aggressive tackling can turn the once-intimidated into the intimidators:

In nearly every match this years, especially when it comes time for Nationals, we’ll give away
