Round # 5 Metro League Match 5/31/11

After a big win in Ft. Lauderdale and the upcoming matches against Austin and Dallas, Navy and Gold met up for round #5 of the Metro League comp. Rucks started well out of the center for both teams, with Navy getting most of the tap outs with new potential Ruckman Josh Cartmill, but Gold getting it out of the middle more often with quick rover Cardio Kenny. Gold started off with a quick lead but after some coaching out of the center Navy closed the gap at half time to
9:5:59 (Gold) to
4:2:26 (Navy)

A few quick position changes in the center for Gold kept the score moving forward in the second half. Navy, though never giving up, and continuing to fight hard right til the end, had ongoing difficulty getting the ball out of the center and with frequent turnovers had difficulty scoring. This lead to a run away score by Gold by the end of the game and a thumping final score of
Gold 21:7:133 to
Navy 7:6:48.

This breaks the previous stalemate and lets Gold sneak ahead 3 wins to Navy’s 2 to lead the Metro League. No injuries and good game experience were the real winners for both teams and a few refreshments were enjoyed afterwards. A good format for more Metro Matches to come

A Win in Ft. Lauderdale

Saturday the Tigers, well supported by Houston, made their 1st ever regular season flight trip, and travelled down to Ft. Lauderdale Florida to play the Ft. Lauderdale Squids and the Florida Saints, both based out of Ft. Lauderdale. It was a ground breaking trip on many levels with it being our first ever game in Florida, first ever in Ft. Lauderdale, first regular season game the team flew to and our first away win for the year!!!!!!

The team, though low in numbers was long in experience and matched up first against a bigger Ft. Lauderdale Squids. We played hard competitive footy ending up only 2 goals behind at the half while playing against the breeze. Spirits were high going into the second half but with The Squids superior numbers and regular interchanges BR soon tired and made that awful mistake of losing their voices on the field, That mistake, which has cost so many teams so many games came back to haunt BR in the second half with a disappointing final score of BR 4:6: 30 to Squids 13:16 : 94

The Second Game, against the Florida Saints was a different story
BR, though a little tired and beat up from their 1st game, listed to their coach’s and came out hard and fast, putting the pressure on a fresh FL. Saints team. Competition was fierce and everyone pulled their own weight with some nice work shown all over the field, Hard defending in the back line, good quick work out of the middle and some spectacular grabs in the forward line setting us up for great goal opportunities. Florida however wasn’t sitting down on the job. They kept coming back hard, and with fresh legs and again superior numbers pushed BR hard for every score we made. At the half BR was ahead by 4:3: 27 to Fl. Saints 4:0: 24.
The second half saw a weary BR side dig deep to show more of the same grit, determination and skill to end up more than doubling their 1st half score against a fading Saints team
Final Score BR 9:6: 60 Fl. Saints 6:3: 39

The after Party was great and started at the Squids local pub “McGuire’s” and after warming up there for a few hours we all headed downtown to America’s Backyard, were amber fluid and shots of all kinds rehydrated out thirsty throats till the late hours. Talks of rematch’s later in the season(Atlanta June 25th and BR Sept 10th), Florida Babes and regular after party antic’s kept us all hopping til dawn. As always another great Footy weekend. One to be replayed next year, hopefully with more strength in our traveling team.

Round 3 Metro League match 4/17/11

On a beautiful Sunday arvo Teams Navy and Gold gathered for Round 3 of our local Metro League Shedule. Despite a shout out to all from El’ Prezidente’ on the need for everyone planning on going to Dallas to show up, numbers were again low. But with return of veteran James Kavanaugh, new recruit Cameron Stout and Joe Roy showing up after his commitments were done, we had the numbers to run a warm up handball game and then onto the Main Event…

Navy and Gold initially went score for score but with higher accuracy Navy ran away with 6 point lead at half time. Into the second half Gold came back well with new recruit Cameron getting involved in the thick of things. Gold hit the lead with just moments left in the game but a last minute turn over allowed Navy to sneak ahead for the win.

First Half
Navy 4:2 : 26
Gold 3:4 : 22

Final Score
Navy 7:5 : 47
Gold 7:2 : 44

Player of the week
This week goes to James ‘Minnesota’ Kavagnauh with his long awaited return to the team after collegic restrictions who made all sessions this week and though intially showing some rusty skills managed to come through in the Metro game to be a strong contributer. Good on ya Minnesota!!!

Results from Houston match (4/9/11)

This past weekend 11 of your fiercest team mates boarded the party bus to Houston for our first USAFL game of the year. We met at Footy Central at 7am (or just after) and drove the bus straight to the game were we played 10 a side with 2 subs supplied by Houston in windy conditions. The team took the field with 4 of our 10 players being rookies so some time was burnt with the Tigers finding our flow on the field. The wind turned out to be a strong factor with the team having the breeze, winning each quarter. But it was Houston’s 10% of their team being rookie’s to our 40% that allowed them to grab a early lead in the 1st quarter and though we won the 2nd and 4th quarters, we were not able to make up all that ground.

The final score was:

Houston – 13:7:85
Baton Rouge – 7:10:52

After party as always was great and the trip home uneventful, all in all a good weekend of Footy with some great play from everyone on the team and a lot of really good skills and play experience was gained.

IF THERE WAS ONE LESSON TO BE LEARNT FROM THIS WEEKEND IS THAT, AS A TEAM WE NEED TO TRAIN AND SCRIMMAGE MORE TO GET OUR GAME SKILLS FLOWING.

BUT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I’VE BEEN TELLING YOU ALL ALONG!!!
See you all at trianing this week, New guys are always welcome. Come try this awesome sport.
