End of 2012 Season, Off season training and more

Hey Guys.

2012 was a great year for the Baton Rouge Tigers. As always we recruited some great new guys, made some great new friends and as alway, unfortunately, lost a few guys. It’s just the natural order of things.

Again as always we had some great, hard hitting, home and way games, some awesome road trips, hosted some great teams, played some good intense scrimmage games and had the privelage and honor of having Dave Wing share some if his great coaching skills with us to help improve our skills and kept up our fitness. We even sent some guys to Nationals who did a fantastic job of represented us.
All in all a great season, and one that I am very proud of.

Now for the off season, Josh Cartmill is currently taking the lead on us having a casual (if still fairly intense) Sunday arvo training on the LSU parade grounds from 3:30 till about 5. So come out and keep those skills and fitness levels up, and it’s a also a great low pressure opportunity for any new guys to join in and see what this great game is about. As well as this a few of us are doing the Happy’s Running Club every Tuesday, meeting at 6pm on 3rd Street, Downtown. They have 5 routes that start and finish at Happy Irish Pub which are all 5k and it’s also a great spot to hang out and socialize afterwards.

Lets all keep Happy, Healthy and Sociable over the Holidays,
keep spreading the word about this awesome sport, by sharing it and recruiting new guys leading up to pre season training 2013, which will start up after next Mardi Gras in mid February.

Cheers Guys, be safe and hope to see you out for a run and a kick soon

1st Metro League Game 3/25/12

Sunday arvo Navy and Gold met on the field for the 1st Metro League match of 2012. With good numbers on a warm spring day the teams, after a good warm up, faced off against each other to see how much of the past few weeks of fitness and skills training had actually sunk in, and everyone was excited to see that a lot of it had!!!

The 1st quarter saw Gold coordinating well out of the ruck with Flea, Tim Lala and Irish worked well together with good position play and leading options, to out score Navy by 4.1. 17 to 1.1. 7.  But Navy regrouped in the 2nd and 3rd quarters putting on some good flowing offensive and defensive plays to bring it back to a tight 7 point game at 3/4 time with Gold 8.5.  37 to Navy’s 7.4. 30.

The final quarter saw Big Rob dominating in the ruck (ha ha) until he was taken out by a few good hits from Joey (Blue Steel) Roy. But fitness and coordination out of the center led Gold to break away (despite some great moments from Navy) to a smashing victory, out scoring Navy by 4 goals in the last minutes to a final score of

Gold 13.8. 84
to
Navy 8.6. 52

Everyone thought that the flow of the game was a great improvement over past showings, but as always there are more improvements to be made. A special congratulations goes out to the 4 new guys that played their 1st ever game of Aussie football, John Ladner, Patrick McClure, Keith Fleniken and Omari Maiden. Just awesome to see you all out there guys. Glad you got to see some of the skills we’ve been developing in training put to good use in a real game situation.

Training again Tuesday,  so see you all there. We’ve made a great start guys, lets keep it going. We’ve got a lot more to work on and our 1st Nationals Level game is just 2.5 weeks away. BR Vs Houston @ Houston Sat April 14th

Local Metro League Draft Picks Completed: Teams are Set

Hey Guys,

We had a very physical training session last night with some really good accuracy on both kicking, passing and good fitness. Game and field positional awareness still need to be improved on, both individually and as a team, but that’s what training is for. So it’s now time for the FUN to start. Our Ist Scrimmage game is this Sunday March 25th, Warm up at 3, Game at 4. Teams keep track of your players, it’s up to you to make sure they show up. Inadequate numbers means an automatic forfeit. If your name isn’t on the list it’s only cause you haven’t made enough training session to meet your eligability. Keep coming and you’ll be playing before you know it.

You’ve all trained hard to get here, this is some of the most fun stuff we do, and where we develop our team game skills to play our National level games so make sure you show up and bring your mouth gaurd and cleats.

Preseason Notes

Just a reminder that our current training schedule is T/TH @ 6:30 at BREC Forest Park, although we will almost certainly have a change in that schedule quickly.  Details to come via email and website.

We’ve also shifted our Sunday training to Lee High/Baton Rouge Magnet High at 3pm to better accommodate everyone’s Sunday morning schedules (church/hangovers).

Also note that we’ll soon be into the contact drills so, for the sake of your teeth, bring a mouth guard to every training session.

And to make the 2012 AFL season more palatable for El Presidente Roberto Montanaro, here’s an optimistic video about the Adelaide Crows.  Surely they won’t spiral into mediocrity (again) after playing for the illustrious NAB Cup, right?
